How Much Is The Ram Power Wagon Towing Capacity?

Ram Power Wagon has been one of the Ram’s most popular pickups since its revamp after the Dodge days. Unlike many of the other trims in the lineup, the Power Wagon is renowned for its off-road driving capabilities.

The improved shock, higher ground clearance, and all-terrain tires are geared toward off-roading on various terrains. But that doesn’t mean towing is out of the picture, either.

Due to their hefty bodies and designs, vehicles in this segment have reduced towing capacities (compare it to the Tradesman or Big Horn, you’ll see). Nevertheless, the Power Wagon manages to hold its own well enough.

Earlier ,the ram power wagon towing capacity is so low but in the 2023 ram 2500 power wagon rebel designed with 6.7L turbo diesel can deliver maximum towing capacity of 14,670 pounds.

Let’s find out how well.

Things To Consider About Towing Capacities

Towing capacity essentially refers to the maximum weight your pickup can tow or roughly can say, towing capacity is the amount of weight that a truck engine can pull from its’ ground, but that number comes with a few asterisks. The chances are that number will vary with different scenarios.

Also, we need to know more about the payload capacity which is quite technically and mathematically well involve with the engine towing capacity. For the same types of operating engine the more have payload capacity the more towing capacity your truck can handle.

First, the vehicle’s own weight is a significant factor. For vehicles like the Power Wagon, which has to pack many more features for its capabilities — the weight comes into account.

Secondly, the number listed as the towing capacity accounts for only the driver. If you’ve got more than one person or if there’s some cargo — the capacity will go down.

So, if your pickup has to carry more weight than the stock configuration assumes, the numbers won’t mean much. You’d have to calculate that out of the equation.

Towing Capacity of The Ram Power Wagon

Officially, the 2023 Ram 2500 power wagon rebel heavy duty truck can handle a maximum towing capacity of 14,670 pounds and  the 2022 Ram 2500 Power Wagon can pull maximum of 10,590 lbs. or approximately 4803 kilograms.

This may not seem like much compared to other trims in the lineup (like the Tradesman’s almost 20,000 lbs. tow capacity). But this is an impressive feat for a pickup with the Power Wagon’s capabilities.

This number assumes that the pickup is properly equipped, meaning it must use the correct hitch setup. Without that assurance, its towing capability can take a hit.

Moreover, this calculation doesn’t include additional passengers, cargo, or any gear that can affect the vehicle’s towing or loading capacities.

For the Power Wagon, the towing capacity has not changed much throughout the previous few versions. For instance, the 2021 Ram Power Wagon had a maximum towing capacity of around 10,580 lbs., while the 2020 one could handle 10,350 lbs.

While we’ll mostly mention the 2022 Power Wagon in this discussion, many of the specs will match with previous models.

Now ,a  quick look at the comparison table of ram 2500 models for the towing capacity and payload capacity bellow.

Towing and Payload Capacity Comparison Among The Ram’s 2500 Models

Available Models Towing Capacity(Maximum) Payload Capacity(Maximum)

Ram 2500 Power Wagon Rebel 14,670 pounds 3,140 pounds

The Ram Power Wagon Engines — HEMI, and Cummins(Overview)

It’s crucial to note that the Power Wagon offers two engine options — the 6.4L HEMI V8 gas engine and the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel I6 engine. Unsurprisingly, the engines (specifically, the torque) significantly affect the towing capacity.

The power wagon 6.4L V8 HEMI engine is a robust gas engine with a higher horsepower than the Turbo Cummins uses 6.4L V8 gas and 6.7L diesel engine comes with lower horsepower (410hp @5600 rpm), which isn’t unusual for a diesel engine. However, the towing capacity doesn’t depend on the horsepower much.

However, the horsepower can provide a higher speed, sure. But towing capability requires torque, which is usually higher on a diesel-powered engine. That’d allow the vehicle to haul things with more raw power, especially at lower RPMs.

The Cummins can produce around 1,075 lb.-ft of torque, which is remarkable. On the other hand, that number for the V8 HEMI goes up to 510.

Both the ram 2500 power wagon and ram 2500 power wagon rebel heavy duty truck has its’ 8-speed automatic transmission system and fuel tank capacity (31 gallons). Having their same 4WD system the riding quality is very similar.

Hence, the diesel-powered variant of the Power Wagon will fare better if towing capacity is the priority.

My Last Words

The Power Wagon is a very capable pickup, be it on or off the road. Assuming that you get this trim with the right engine setup, the Ram Power Wagon can tow some hefty loads — especially if you need to conquer bumpy terrains alongside the towing.
