Peter Gabriel takes the fast baton from Congressman Payne

May 12, 2009 By: Admin Category: Peter Gabriel

Washington, D.C.— Legendary Genesis front man and solo artist Peter Gabriel announced today that he will
take over in the fasting chain from U.S. Representative Donald Payne and Switchfoot front man Jon Foreman
as part of the Darfur Fast for Life. From Wednesday, May 13 to Friday May 15, Gabriel will follow a string of
fasters around the globe to take a stand of solidarity with the people of Darfur, including Actress-Activist Mia
Farrow and Virgin CEO and Founder Sir Richard Branson. He will be on a water-only fast for those three

Said Gabriel, “The people of Darfur have suffered horribly in the last six years and despite many campaigns,
protests and the judgment of the International Criminal Court, there has been insufficient international
response to stop the suffering. For that reason, I really hope that the Darfur Fast for Life campaign puts the
plight of the Darfuris back on the world’s priority list. I also believe it is enormously important that there is
sufficient international backing for the ICC to bring President Bashir to trial”

Gabriel began his solo career in 1975 after leaving the legendary rock band Genesis. Since then, he has
released eleven solo albums and written soundtracks for three films. In 1980 he founded WOMAD, World of
Music Arts and Dance, a music festival that introduced world music to 22 different countries and islands. In
1989, Gabriel conceived and co-founded Witness.org, and went on to co-found the Elders.org along with
Richard Branson, and launched by Nelson Mandela in July 2007. Gabriel has received several accolades
including, the Man of Peace award, presented by the Nobel Peace Laureates in 2007, the ‘Chevalier dans
l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ and the ‘Quadriga Award. He has also received various lifetime achievement
awards as well as BT’s digital Music Pioneer Award and Grammy awards for his music and video work.

Gabriel joins fasters from over 25 countries including Albania, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chad, France,
Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Puerto Rico,
Romania, Senegal, Spain, Sudan, Thailand, UK and USA. Gabriel and others will continue to provide video
and blog posts throughout the Darfur Fast for Life at www.fastdarfur.org.

The Darfur Fast for Life | We are leaders, activists and citizens around the world who fast in solidarity with
the people of Darfur because they do not have a choice. We fast as a personal expression of outrage at a world
that has allowed the suffering of millions of innocent people. We fast because as we simply watched, Darfur’s
defenseless people were forced into wretched camps where today they are facing starvation and disease. We
fast because those in positions of authority who know what is right and just, could and should do more to
alleviate their suffering and bring peace, protection, and justice to the people of Sudan.

We fast for Darfur’s courageous people —because we yearn for a world where human rights are respected and
a life of dignity is the legacy for every man, woman and child.
